For Friday April 23, 2010, please post in regards to how an artist can use or manipulate scale within his/her work as a way of communicating his/her intent?

How do different emphasis on scale affect an overall composition? What intentional methods can an artist use to alter his/her communication? What effect does the overall scale of a composition have on a viewer? List an example or two of specific artworks (and embed their images within your post if possible) of artworks where a strong emphasis on scale is present. Especially use artworks that are of interest to you.

This is academic writing and your post must be well-constructed with proper spelling and grammar. As well, thoughtful paragraphs and complete expression of ideas is also crucial. The more you provide critical analysis of the chapters and their concepts when you post your blogs, the more comfortable you’ll become with the ideas, and the more naturally you’ll be able to reproduce those thoughts in class, critique, conversation and other areas.

For Friday April 23, 2010, please post in regards to balance and rhythm within art, specifically focusing your writing to the following questions.

How do balance and rhythm convey emotion? What can certain forms of balance (horizontal, vertical, diagonal, imbalance, etc…) do to affect emotion? How? What artistic elements can be used and how to achieve balance within an artwork? How does rhythm work with or against balance? How do these two tie into other elements of art and design (unity, variety, etc…)

For Friday April 16, 2010, please respond to the following prompt in as much detail as possible:

Artwork, in the same respect as much of our history, is derived from an idealistic pursuit of unity. Explain the importance of the conceptual basis of unity and its importance (in society). How is unity achieved? What are its goals? How does social unity compare to unity found within artwork (conceptually, visually, etc…)? Do both social unity and artistic unity strive for the same goals?

Use examples of specific art styles or artists, and correlate those with specific examples from history. Be detailed about an artist’s approach to creating unity within a work (and why) and how that can translate into the world at large.

There will be no blog post for Week 11, even though it was announced differently in class. However, there will be one each week from here on out for the remainder of the semester starting next week.

We’ll be discussing Chapter 11 at the beginning of next week, so please read that in advance to coming to class. Also, come with 3 sketches/ideas for your final project. You need to have at least 3 solid ideas in your sketchbook.

For Friday March 26, 2010, please analyze the following image by M.C. Escher in terms of space, time and motion. (Click image to enlarge)

Does the image portray a sense of space? If so, what specific techniques is the artist utilizing to do so? Does the image portray a sense of time elapsing or motion? If so, how? Discuss these ideas in further depth than just single sentence responses.

Furthermore, discuss the artist’s use of line, shape, color, value and texture within the work.

For Friday February 26, 2010, please post a directly related writing in response to Chapter 5 and how color interacts in your life. Remember that the significance and power of color is important to how we think and feel, both in art and life. It affects us both consciously and subconsciously. With that in mind, feel free to restate elements of color theory or which colors signify what emotions, but be sure to relate them to, and talk about, your own experience with color and reflect on how elements found within color theory are present in your own life or artwork.
